ASUU Threatens Indefinite Strike in Kwara, Oyo Universities Over Unimplemented 2025 Agreement
The Ibadan Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike in three state-owned universities over the failure of the Oyo and Kwara State governments to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement.
The warning was issued on Tuesday during a press conference held at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo.
ASUU's Ibadan Zone, comprising the University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Osun State University, Kwara State University (KWASU), and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUED), expressed dissatisfaction over what it described as the continued refusal of some state governments to honour the agreement.
According to the union, while all federal universities and at least ten state universities across the country have fully implemented the agreement, including the payment of arrears, only Osun State University has complied within the Ibadan Zone.
The union accused the governments of Oyo and Kwara states of failing to provide the financial backing needed to implement the agreement in LAUTECH, KWASU and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education.
ASUU, however, commended the governing councils of the affected institutions for their efforts toward resolving the issue.
Speaking on behalf of the zone, the Zonal Coordinator, Biodun Olaniran, said the patience of members in the affected universities had been exhausted after waiting for six months without concrete action.
He announced that congresses in the affected institutions had commenced full mobilisation for an indefinite strike unless the state governments immediately implement the agreement.
The union demanded that the next salary payment to its members should reflect the Consequential Adjustment and all other allowances contained in the agreement. It also called for the payment of all outstanding arrears from January 2026 without further delay.
ASUU warned that any continued delay or failure by the affected state governments would leave the union with no option but to shut down academic activities through an indefinite industrial action.
The union maintained that it remained committed to industrial peace but stressed that lasting harmony could only be achieved through the full implementation of the signed agreement.
Earlier, ASUU expressed sympathy to the Oyo State Government and families affected by insecurity, particularly victims of recent incidents in Esin-Ele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area. It also commended the state government's efforts to restore peace and secure the release of abducted persons.
