North Central Youth Hails State Police Passage, Commends Tinubu
The North Central Zone of the Nigeria Youth Organization (NYO) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the passage of the constitutional amendment bill establishing State Police, describing the development as a major step toward strengthening security and deepening true federalism in Nigeria.
The commendation followed a courtesy visit by the zonal leadership of the organization to the Kwara State Chapter of the Nigeria Youth Organization.
In a statement jointly signed by the Zonal Coordinator, Hon. Gozuk Sylvia Shibenkwa, and the Zonal Secretary, Comrade Adeleye Roy Tolorunleke, the organization described the Senate's approval of the bill as a landmark achievement that would enhance grassroots security and unlock economic opportunities across the country.
"The passage of the State Police bill is a historic victory for true federalism. It demonstrates President Tinubu's commitment to building a safer and more effective governance structure that brings security closer to the people," the statement read.
The youth body noted that insecurity had continued to hinder investment and economic growth across the North Central region, stressing that the establishment of State Police would improve community policing and restore investor confidence.
"For too long, the energy, agricultural potential, and entrepreneurial spirit of our youths have been constrained by insecurity. No serious investor will commit resources to an environment where lives and property are not adequately protected. State Police will help change this reality," the organization stated.
The group also praised the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, for passing all the clauses of the constitutional amendment bill and urged State Houses of Assembly across the North Central states to give the legislation speedy approval.
"We call on all State Houses of Assembly within the North Central zone to act with urgency by concurring with this historic legislation in the interest of peace, security, and development," it added.
According to the organization, decentralized policing would also encourage healthy competition among governors in the areas of security management, public safety, and youth engagement.
Addressing concerns over possible political abuse of State Police, the organization argued that adequate constitutional safeguards could prevent misuse, noting that localized security structures had previously proven effective in addressing criminal activities.
"This reform marks a decisive turning point in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping. We remain committed to supporting policies that strengthen governance, secure lives, and position the North Central region as a preferred destination for investment and development," the statement concluded.
