Kwara Group Commends Aro Meta for Endorsing Credible Governorship Aspirant
A pro-Kwara socio-political group, the Kwara for Kwarans Initiative, has praised the Aro Meta Development Association for what it described as a bold step toward identifying a credible candidate ahead of the 2027 Kwara State governorship election.
In a statement issued on Monday in Ilorin, the group commended the association for conducting what it called an extensive screening process of aspirants from Kwara South before endorsing Dr. Muyideen Salako for governor.
The group said Aro Meta demonstrated leadership and patriotism by taking active part in the leadership selection process rather than leaving critical political decisions solely in the hands of politicians.
“Aro Meta is bold enough to do the undone. They have bestowed upon themselves the responsibility of searching for the most credible among all. This is leadership. This is patriotism. This is how you build a state that works,” the statement read.
The commendation followed Aro Meta’s endorsement of Dr. Salako during a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Ilorin. The association also predicted that some governorship aspirants from Kwara South would step down to support the endorsed candidate.
The Kwara for Kwarans Initiative noted that the intervention by Aro Meta reflects the kind of civic engagement needed to strengthen democracy and ensure equitable development across the state.
According to the group, development associations and community-based organizations should play more active roles in the political process by helping to identify competent and widely acceptable leaders.
It urged other associations across the three senatorial districts of the state to place the interest of Kwara above personal or sectional sentiments.
“We urge all other development associations to look beyond sentiments, personal interests, or organizational benefits. Kwara State’s future starts now, at this selection process,” the statement added.
The group further stressed the need for competence, fairness, and capacity in the choice of future leaders, rather than relying solely on zoning arrangements not backed by consensus or law.
It also appealed to the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Presidency to pay attention to grassroots opinions during the candidate selection process, insisting that candidates with broad community support stand a better chance of winning elections and delivering good governance.
Aro Meta Development Association, which represents the three major ethnic blocs in Kwara South; Igbomina, Ibolo, and Ekiti, said its goal is to promote unity and ensure the district speaks with one voice on governance matters.
The association disclosed that it carried out consultations and background checks on aspirants, including visits to their family compounds, before arriving at its decision to endorse Dr. Salako as a unifying figure with statewide acceptance.
Political observers believe the endorsement and the reactions trailing it may further shape political alignments ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Kwara State.
