VIDEOS: Death Toll Rises to 162 in Woro, Nuku Communities Attack As Search Continues in Kaiama LGA
The death toll from the bandit attacks on Woro and Nuku communities in Gbanabe One Ward of Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara State, has risen to 162, as search-and-rescue operations continue for possible survivors and missing residents.
Local sources confirmed on Wednesday that more bodies were recovered from surrounding bushes and burnt homes in both communities, raising fears that the figure may increase as security operatives and volunteers comb the affected areas.
Residents said the attackers struck on Tuesday evening, setting several houses ablaze and forcing many villagers to flee for safety. The scale of destruction has left the communities in shock, with families still searching for loved ones.
A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said rescue efforts are ongoing despite challenges posed by insecurity and limited access to some parts of the villages.
“Many people ran into nearby forests during the attack. Some bodies are still being discovered, while others are missing. The search is still ongoing,” the source said.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Kwara State Government, through the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, commiserated with the people of Woro and Nuku communities and families of the victims, describing the incident as heartbreaking and deeply painful.
In a statement, the government expressed its condolences and assured residents that security agencies had been directed to intensify operations in the area.
“The Governor sends his heartfelt condolences to the people of Woro and Nuku communities and the bereaved families. He assures them that the state government is working closely with security agencies to restore peace and prevent further attacks,” the statement read in part.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation from the police or military regarding the casualty figures or arrests connected to the incident.
The attack has further heightened concerns over rising insecurity in rural parts of Kwara State, with residents calling on both the state and federal governments to urgently strengthen security presence in vulnerable communities.
