Kwara PDP Rejects Police Report On Assault Of Ifelodun Protesting Women

…Describes It as a Failed Cover-Up and an Insult to Public Intelligence

The Kwara State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rejects and condemns the so-called “investigation report” issued by the Kwara State Police Command concerning the brutal assault on helpless women who protested at the Kwara State Government House over the kidnapping of their family members in December last year .

The party in a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara dismissed the police report as lacking in sincerity and an ugly way of covering up government crime against the people . The party notes that the police statement is not only misleading, but also amounts to a dangerous attempt to rewrite a crime that was clearly captured on video and witnessed by members of the public.

As a party , we state categorically that the video in circulation is original in its entirety and was filmed directly in front of the Kwara State Government House. The police claim of “digital manipulation” and “splicing” is not supported by any meaningful technical evidence. No forensic data, no time stamps, no expert breakdown, and no verifiable analysis was provided to substantiate this claim. This is the most embarrassing report expected from a security outfit the country so rely on .

More importantly, the Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, himself issued an official public statement condemning the attack and calling on the police authority to identify and prosecute those responsible. This singular action by the Governor directly contradicts the police position that no such incident occurred. If nothing happened, what exactly did the Governor condemn?

Furthermore, uniformed police officers were physically present at the scene of the attack and were clearly captured in the same video now being dismissed as “manipulated.” Yet, the police report failed to explain whether those police were invited for questioning in their investigation. 

It is unfortunate that despite the clear visibility of the attackers faces in the said video with their voices so loud while chanting the name of Governor Abdulrahaman Abdulrazaq as their leader , not a single arrest was been made nor was there any indication that the police attempted to identify or question the thugs seen carrying out the assault. This raises serious integrity questions about policing in Nigeria as a nation .

The claim that no victim has come forward also rings hollow. The women in the video were visibly identified as protesters from Oke Ode, Agunjin, Agbeku and surrounding communities. Their voices, faces, and pleas were recorded live. Their trauma was public. The burden of investigation lies with the police, not with impoverished victims who were beaten and chased away from Government House while seeking help from government. 

We also find it troubling that the police focused more on protest notification protocols than on the violence committed against unarmed women and children. Peaceful protest is a constitutional right. Even if procedural issues existed, nothing justifies physical assault by thugs under police watch.

We make bold to say that this embarrassing police report, as presented, is capable of eroding public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and reducing the institution to an object of ridicule before the Nigerian people. When video evidence is dismissed without proof and perpetrators are shielded without investigation, public trust in law enforcement will inevitably collapse.

The Kwara PDP, alongside other well-meaning Kwarans, therefore rejects in totality the conclusions of the Kwara State Police Command and calls on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, to take over the investigation in order to uncover the truth and ensure that all those who violated the law are brought to justice.

We also call on the National Human Rights Commission and credible civil society organisations to intervene by launching independent investigations into this disturbing incident.

This matter is not about politics. It is about women crying for their kidnapped husbands and being beaten for it. It is about whether Nigeria is governed by law or by denial. No amount of official distortion can erase what the world has already seen.
