Kwara: Court Convicts Commercial Driver for Assaulting FRSC Patrol Team

An Ilorin Magistrate Court has convicted a commercial driver, Samson Ayadi, for assaulting operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kwara State.

Ayadi was arraigned before Magistrate I.Y. Jimade over an incident that occurred on July 20, 2024, while he was driving a Toyota Sienna along the Ilorin–Jebba Road at Molete Junction.

The court heard that the driver mobilised a crowd against operatives of the FRSC Oloru Unit Command, physically assaulted the officers, and even climbed into their patrol vehicle to remove an impounded motorcycle. The motorcycle rider reportedly stripped himself naked in defiance of arrest.

Three prosecution witnesses testified against Ayadi, while he appeared as the sole defence witness. His counsel’s “no-case submission” was dismissed, with the court ruling that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Delivering judgment, Magistrate Jimade sentenced Ayadi to:

Six months’ imprisonment or a ₦20,000 fine for criminal intimidation;

Three months’ imprisonment or a ₦30,000 fine for criminal assault;

Three months’ imprisonment or a ₦10,000 fine for inciting disturbance; and

Six months’ imprisonment or a ₦30,000 fine for obstructing a public officer on duty.

The prosecution was led by the FRSC Zonal Legal Officer, DCC Estine Okolo.
