KWASU, Alumni Association Face Legal Action Over Alleged Unlawful Alumni Elections

The Kwara State University (KWASU) and its Alumni Association are embroiled in legal controversy following allegations of unconstitutional practices during the recent alumni elections. The situation has now escalated. It has drawn significant attention from both the media and the alumni community.
Since late last year, numerous members of the KWASU Alumni Association have voiced concerns over what they describe as consistent violations of the association's constitution by its leadership. The discontent led to a Twitter Space in December 2024, which saw over a thousand alumni members discussing the issue, alongside the circulation of an online petition demanding the cessation of the election process due to procedural flaws.
The crux of the controversy lies in the December 2024 election, which was intended to conclude the term of an administration that had been in office since June 2019. According to the association's constitution, the term should not exceed five years, yet the administration extended its tenure by nearly a year without proper constitutional amendment or member approval. Despite these concerns, the university swiftly announced the election results across its communication channels, just an hour after what many members consider an unconstitutional election.
The grievances include the unilateral imposition of a new constitution by the association's leadership without the required ratification from the alumni congress. This move was seen as lacking inclusivity and transparency, fundamental to the governance of such an association. Additionally, the election process itself was criticised for its lack of openness; the formation of the election committee, the secretive selection of delegates, and last-minute disclosure of voter information were all done in contravention of the association's rules.
Further issues arose with the introduction of nomination fees for delegates, potentially excluding less financially privileged members from participating in the democratic process. The absence of widespread, timely communication about the electoral process left many alumni uninformed and unable to engage effectively.
These irregularities have not only sparked debates on leadership accountability and constitutional adherence but have also led to legal proceedings against both the university and the association. The legal action aims to rectify the recent electoral discrepancies and to set a precedent for future elections to adhere strictly to the association's constitution and democratic norms.
This case highlights significant concerns over transparency, fairness, and member engagement within the KWASU Alumni Association, principles that are meant to be its cornerstone. The outcome of this legal battle could redefine governance practices within alumni associations in Nigeria. It could emphasise the importance of constitutional integrity and member participation in leadership selection.
