Setback for Kwara North as Key APC Aspirant Backs Kwara Central Candidate for Governorship
A major political development has emerged in Kwara State as a frontline aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, Prince Haliru Dantsoho Mahmud, has stepped down from the 2027 governorship race and declared support for a candidate from Kwara Central.
Dantsoho, who had consistently championed the call for Kwara North to produce the next governor, announced his decision at an event held in Ilorin.
He said the move followed wide consultations and was informed by the need to prioritise unity and stability in the state.
According to him, Kwara requires a leader who can unify all regions and sustain ongoing political alignments.
He subsequently endorsed Ambassador Abdulfatai Yahaya Seriki Gambari, praising his contributions to grassroots development and his support for the current administration.
Kwara Central is widely seen as the political stronghold of the state due to its population size and significant voting strength, which frequently determines electoral outcomes.
Political analysts say Dantsoho’s withdrawal represents a setback for Kwara North’s long-standing agitation for power rotation but may reshape alliances within the APC ahead of the polls.
