...Suspect Admits Pleading With Victim as Certificate Controversy Emerges
A female patient has accused a nurse at Oro General Hospital in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State of drugging and sexually assaulting her after administering an injection. The victim made the allegation during a live human-rights programme on Agidigbo FM, hosted by the popular broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat.
The suspect, identified as Mr. Oyeniyi Kayode, appeared on the same programme, where he gave his own account of events including statements that have raised further suspicion and controversy.
Victim: “I woke up with pains, blood, and a strange taste in my mouth.”
The victim narrated that she went to the hospital alone to seek treatment for an illness. According to her, the nurse gave her an injection that caused her to lose consciousness.
She said:
“I went to the hospital because I wasn’t feeling well. He gave me an injection, and immediately I lost my senses. When I woke up, I felt pains in my private part and saw blood. There was also a strange taste in my mouth which my friend later confirmed to be semen.”
She added that she regained consciousness inside the hospital toilet with the suspect present, leaving her frightened and confused.
Nurse’s Account: “I know her… I gave her painkiller injection and warned her about hallucination.”
Responding on air, the suspect, Mr. Oyeniyi Kayode, denied raping the patient but admitted familiarity with her.
According to him:
“I have known her for about a year. She came complaining of ulcer pain. I attended to her in a public ward, not a private ward. I gave her a painkiller injection and I told her it could cause hallucinations, and that is what happened.”
He also admitted pleading with the lady after the incident not because he was guilty, according to him, but to “avoid trouble.”
In his words:
“She said I should pay all the money she used for tests and treatment. To avoid trouble, I pleaded with her.”
Certificate Controversy: Presenter Questions His Qualification
During the programme, host Oriyomi Hamzat confronted the suspect about his professional qualifications and certification to work as a nurse.
The suspect claimed:
“I have an HND. I studied Public Health and graduated from Oyo State College of Health and Science, Eleyele, in 2017.”
However, the presenter pointed out that:
Public Health HND graduates are not registered nurses
They are not qualified to administer injections or treat patients independently
Practicing as a nurse with such a certificate amounts to impersonation
This raised serious concerns about how Mr. Kayode gained employment at the general hospital and why he was allowed to treat patients.
Victim Claims Nurse Later Confessed Privately
The victim further alleged that the suspect confessed indirectly when she later confronted him after the incident, following advice from a woman at her Industrial Training (IT) centre.
Public Reaction and Calls for Accountability
The incident has sparked outrage on the internet, with citizens and human rights groups demanding:
"Immediate suspension of the suspect"
"Investigation into his alleged impersonation"
"A full probe into the hospital’s hiring process"
"Justice for the victim"
A community member noted:
“This is beyond rape alone; it is about the safety of patients and the credibility of our hospitals. Government must act immediately.”
Hospital and Government Yet to Respond
As at press time, the management of Oro General Hospital and the Kwara State Ministry of Health have not released official statements on the allegations or the certificate controversy.
