'Abdulrahman's Govt Prioritises Flagpole over Children’s Lives'- PDP Reacts to UNICEF's Malnutrition Report
The Kwara State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is deeply saddened by the recent revelation by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), which disclosed that over 300,000 children in Kwara State are suffering from severe malnutrition, with over 40% of children stunted due to lack of proper nutrition and access to basic healthcare.
This terrible situation, laid bare during the handover of 3,964 cartons of ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) by UNICEF, confirms what our party has always maintained—that the Abdulrazaq-led APC government is failing woefully in its most basic responsibilities to the people, particularly the most vulnerable while engaging in cosmetics and propaganda.
In a state where school children sit on bare floors to receive lectures and the judiciary now holds court proceedings under the trees due to dilapidated infrastructure, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq prefers to waste taxpayers' money on flagpole erection, self-glorification stunts, and frivolous ventures that bear no relevance to the daily struggle of the average Kwara family.
The party lauds UNICEF for its intervention and courage to expose the dire reality of the Kwara child—one whom the Abdulrahman government has abandoned, neglected, and exposed to hunger, disease, and death.
We emphasize that not only are 300,000 children malnourished, but over 1 million of their parents and guardians have equally been pushed into extreme poverty, hunger, and economic stagnation—courtesy of Governor Abdulrahman’s anti-people policies such as demolition of shops and erection of walls to block businesses, including the harsh taxation regime that continues to strangle small-scale businesses and stifle local economic growth.
The revelation by UNICEF also exposes the government’s failure to implement a functional and inclusive health framework for children, particularly within the critical first 1,000 days of life, when nutrition and healthcare are most vital. It is shameful that management of acute malnutrition in Kwara is still limited to a few health centers, despite the huge resources available to the state and countless budgetary claims to the contrary.
The PDP demands that Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq publicly account for the billions of naira claimed to have been spent on various sectors, including education and health that continue to suffer retrogression.
