"Why Kwara Government Is Forming Another Emirate Group To Rival The IEYDA"

The Special Adviser on Political Matters to Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazak, Abubakar Suleiman (Sai Kai), has explained why his office is supporting the creation of a parallel group to rival the Ilorin Emirate Youth Development Association (IEYDA).

In a reaction to widespread allegations that the Kwara State Government is working to factionalize the IEYDA, Suleiman dismissed claims that the move is politically motivated or an attempt to undermine the group’s autonomy.

The controversy erupted after an activist, Comrade Abdulkadir Onilemarun, accused the state government of plotting to weaken the influence of IEYDA, a youth group established under the authority of the Emir of Ilorin, by creating a rival faction. This has led to speculations about the government’s intentions and its relationship with traditional Emirate institutions.

Speaking on the matter, Suleiman clarified that his office is not directly involved in factionalizing the IEYDA. He alleged that some members of the IEYDA, dissatisfied with the leadership of its current chairman, Alhaji Muhammad Uthman Jagunma, approached him with the idea of forming another group.

“Some IEYDA members who are not comfortable with his leadership came to inform me of their plans to form another association. As a public servant, I have every right to welcome anyone who comes to my office, even if Jagunma himself leads his team to meet me. My role is to listen to everyone,” Suleiman stated.

Suleiman accused Jagunma of being politically aligned with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), alleging that he is also an associate of Senator Saliu Mustapha and has represented him at various forums.

“I know Jagunma is a card-carrying member of the PDP, and the majority of his executives are also PDP members. They are not neutral. While I have no personal issues with IEYDA, I must point out what I know about its leadership,” Suleiman said.

He also rebuffed claims that he is a PDP member, noting his past role as a personal assistant to Dr. Tolagbe Alege, whom he described as a respected figure but not indicative of his political.
