'Zoning Is Not Constitutional But ...' -Sen. Sodiq Umar
In an exclusive interview with Factualtimesng.com, Senator Sadiq Umar, the representative of Kwara North, has stated that zoning is not constitutional in a democracy. The interview, titled "Democracy @25: Exclusive Interview With Senator Sadiq Umar," addressed the ongoing agitation for zoning the governorship seat in Kwara State to the northern region.
When asked about his take on the zoning agitation, Senator Umar acknowledged the need for fairness, justice, and equity in the distribution of political offices. He stated, "We are running a democracy, zoning is not constitutional. However, democracy is supposed to give everyone a sense of belonging for everyone to be happy."
The Senator further explained that the Kwara North region has never had the opportunity to produce the governor since 1999, and the current agitation is more about giving them a chance at the top leadership position. "Kwara Central and Kwara South will harmonize because Kwara North has never had the opportunity of sitting in the number one seat since 1999. So, I do not see it as Kwara north agitation for zoning but agitation for fairness, justice and equity."
Highlighting his own achievements in Kwara North, Senator Umar said he has drilled 150 boreholes, constructed 14 roads, and installed 1,500 streetlights across five local government areas in the region over the past five years.
The Senator's stance on zoning reflects the ongoing debate within Kwara's political landscape as the state prepares for the 2027 gubernatorial election. While he acknowledges the need for inclusive governance, he maintains that zoning is not a constitutional requirement in a democratic system.
