Heavy Flood Sacks Lagos Residents From Their Homes Overnight
A flood of unusual quantity has sacked some residents of Ajao Estate in Oshodi/Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos from their homes on Saturday morning.
Heavy showers started on Friday night and extended into the early hours of Saturday. The downpour of heavy rain led to the overnight flooding which destroyed properties worth millions of naira.

An affected resident, who simply wished to be identified as Mike, told FIJ that the flood may have been caused by uncleared drainage systems and canals.
“I was in a deep sleep when I suddenly heard the voice of my next door neighbour. He was frantically calling out to me, asking me to leave my flat immediately before I got drowned by flood,” said Mike.
“As I rose from bed, I saw that my entire room was already flooded. The water level in my flat had risen to my knee level by then. I quickly took the things that were most valuable to me and left my flat at once.
“As we speak, all my electronic gadgets have been damaged by the flood.”
Grace, another resident, told FIJ that residents of the area last experienced a similar heavy flood in July 2021.

“We last experienced this kind of flood in July 2021. Since then, residents, especially landlords, made efforts in clearing the drainage system in the environment in order to prevent a reoccurrence,” Grace said.
“We never knew this could still happen again. Now, property worth millions of naira have been destroyed.
“I could not really salvage my valuables because the rain started late in the night. This is a very big loss to those of us staying in this area.”
Some of the streets affected by the flood were Ugo Nnabuife, Anthony Udo, Akeem Shittu, Itanola drive, New world and Eyituoyo Omatshola.
About 19 states were affected by a great flood in 2022 after Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam released its waters. Lagos was not one of the affected Nigerian states at the time.
