Kwara PDP Reacts to Exit of Former Chairman and Treasurer

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has reacted to the recent defection of its former State Chairman, Hon. Babatunde Mohammed, and former State Treasurer, Gabriel Kananjogun, describing their departure as a development that will further strengthen the party.

In a statement issued by the State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, the party noted that the exit of the duo did not come as a surprise, saying it represents “a necessary phase of renewal that allows genuine, loyal, and value-driven members—especially hardworking youths—to thrive within the system.”

According to Adewara, the decisions of the two former officials to leave the PDP were based on personal ambitions that were not aligned with the collective direction of the party.

“Hon. Babatunde Mohammed, who served as State Chairman for four years, had sought re-election during the last state congress. However, members of the party, after a fair assessment of his tenure and overall performance, opted for a new leadership direction,” he explained.

He added that Gabriel Kananjogun, the immediate past State Treasurer, also had ambitions to become the PDP Chairman in Moro Local Government but was not endorsed by the members, who preferred alternative leadership at the local level.

“It is therefore surprising that individuals who were not returned by popular choice now claim to have been victims of anti-democratic practices,” Adewara said. “The PDP in Kwara State remains open to all who are sincere about service, loyalty, and collective progress.”

Reacting to reports that Hon. Babatunde Mohammed may be assuming a leadership role in another party, Adewara remarked that such political realignments are part of democracy but do not diminish the strength or unity of the PDP in Kwara.

“Our party remains stronger, more united, and firmly anchored on the will of the people, not the ambitions of individuals,” he added.

The statement concluded by urging party members across the 16 local government areas of Kwara State to remain focused and undistracted, assuring them that the PDP continues to grow in numbers and credibility ahead of future elections.
