Kwara South LG Chairmen Order Closure of Kara Markets, Olupo of Ajase-Ipo Rejects Move
Following the order by local government chairmen in the Kwara South Senatorial District for the immediate closure of all Kara (cattle) markets in the area over security concerns.
The decision, announced on Thursday under the aegis of the Forum of Seven Local Government Chairmen in Kwara South, was taken after what they described as “extensive stakeholders’ engagement and reviews.” The shutdown, which takes effect from Friday, September 19, will remain in place until further notice.
However, the directive has drawn opposition from the Ajase-Ipo Descendants Union (ADU), acting on the instruction of His Royal Majesty, Oba Ismail Yahaya Atoloye Muhammed Alebiosu, the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo.
In a statement signed by its National Public Relations Officer, Hon. Balogun Monsuru Alabi, the Union announced that Kara Market in Ajase-Ipo would continue to operate on every official market day.
Describing Kara Market as a vital hub of commerce and livelihood, the ADU criticized the closure order as reckless, undemocratic, and a fundamental breach of protocol. The Union argued that the decision was taken without proper consultation with traditional rulers of the affected communities.
“The Local Government Chairmen are reminded that they are not military administrators, and governance must always respect established institutions and community stakeholders,” the statement read.
Reaffirming Ajase-Ipo’s commitment to peace and order, the Olupo urged residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies by reporting suspicious persons or movements in order to curb kidnapping and other security threats.
The Ajase-Ipo Descendants Union restated its full alignment with the monarch’s directive and pledged its commitment to the safety, unity, and prosperity of the community.
