Kwara Student Murder: Suspect Admits to Dismembering Body
Abdulrahman Bello, the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of Hafsoh, a final-year student at the Kwara State College of Education, stunned the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin on Wednesday by admitting that he dismembered the deceased’s body after consuming alcohol—but claimed she died of natural causes.
Testifying before Justice Hannah Ajayi as he opened his defence, Bello told the court that he acted alone in cutting the victim’s body into parts and that none of his co-defendants were involved in the crime.
According to his testimony, Hafsoh allegedly suffered an asthma attack and died during sexual intercourse.
“I went out to get an inhaler for her when I noticed she was gasping. By the time I returned, she had died,” Bello claimed. “So, I left to take alcohol and came back to cut the body into pieces.”
During cross-examination by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Bello admitted that he neither called any neighbours for help nor reported the incident to the police or medical authorities, explaining that he was afraid of the victim’s father.
Bello also denied keeping the deceased’s blood and severed hands for ritual purposes, dismissing allegations that the crime was financially motivated.
He claimed that earlier confessional statements in a police-recorded video—in which he reportedly confessed to poisoning the victim’s food and strangling her—were extracted under torture.
The court has adjourned proceedings until July 2, 2025, for the final adoption of written addresses. Defence counsel was given seven days to file their submissions, while the prosecution was granted 10 days to respond after receiving the defence’s filings.
