17-year-old Accused Of Stabbing ‘Mother’s Rival’ To Death In Kwara
A 17-year-old male, identified as Malik, allegedly stabbed his mother’s co-wife, Falilat Yusuf—also known locally as “Iya Ganiyat”—to death on Friday afternoon in the Danialu area of Gaa Akanbi, Ilorin, shortly after congregational prayers.
According to a neighbour who preferred not to be named, the stabbing occurred at around 2 p.m. “A woman was stabbed to death in her house … she was stabbed multiple times on her neck allegedly by a young man, who is the son of her husband’s concubine,” they said. The suspect was arrested near the scene and taken to the police station. 
Residents told journalists on Sunday that Malik lived close by in a different house rented by their shared husband. Teslim, one of the victim’s sons, said the family had previously warned Malik not to visit their home after several alleged thefts. On the day of the attack, he claimed he saw Malik near the compound making “suspicious hand gestures.” “The moment our eyes met, he ran away,” Teslim recalled. He later found his mother “in a pool of blood” and raised the alarm. Malik purportedly returned shortly after, wearing different clothes and with blood on his shoes, before being apprehended by neighbours and handed over to police.
Another neighbour, Mrs. Omotayo, noted that the late Yusuf, who sold potatoes, had closed her shop in recent days due to rising tension and threats in the community.
Yusuf was buried over the weekend according to Islamic rites.
Efforts to reach SP Ejire Adeyemi Adetoun, spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, resulted in neither confirmation nor denial of the incident. She reportedly said she would pass on a message and had not responded to follow-up messages at the time of this report.
