Kwara Central Will Retain Political Dominance Beyond 2027 – Gov Abdulrazaq’s Ally
A close associate of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and Chairman of the Board of the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority, Hon. Abdullateef Alakawa, has declared that Kwara Central will continue to be at the forefront of political governance in the state beyond 2027.
Alakawa made this statement at the Laylatul-Qadr 2025 AA Ramadan Lecture and Special Prayer held in honor of Governor AbdulRazaq at AGF House, Surulere, Ilorin. The event, attended by Islamic scholars, politicians, and community leaders, was organized to pray for the governor and the progress of the state.
While addressing attendees, Alakawa urged clerics to pray for the continued dominance of Kwara Central in the affairs of the state after AbdulRazaq’s tenure.
"I want to implore you, our erudite men of God, to help us thank Allah for giving us Governor AbdulRazaq, who has not brought disgrace to this town or the Emir since he became governor of this state. He has been a symbol of peace for everyone. Also, I want you to pray to Allah that when the Governor completes his tenure in 2027, Ilorin should not be backward, and we should continue to be decision-makers," Alakawa stated.
His comments come at a time when political stakeholders from Kwara North have intensified their agitation for power rotation in the state. The demand for a governor from Kwara North has been a long-standing issue, with proponents arguing that the region has been politically marginalized.
However, Alakawa’s open declaration, being a prominent ally of Governor AbdulRazaq, signals a major setback for Kwara North’s aspirations, reinforcing the belief that the ruling political class in Ilorin intends to maintain control of the governorship beyond the next election cycle.
The event also featured prayers led by prominent Islamic scholars, who called for peace, unity, and continued progress in Kwara State under Governor AbdulRazaq’s leadership.
Observers have noted that Alakawa’s remark could further deepen the political divide between Kwara Central and Kwara North stakeholders. While the governor has yet to make an official statement on his succession plans, this latest development indicates that the battle for the governorship seat will be one to watch in the coming months.
