Nagode Is A Palace Amana, While Suleiman Is Political Amana
Faruq Atofarati, an aide to Prof. Abubakar Suleiman, the Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), has weighed in on the growing debate over the titles of Amana and Amana Ngeri.
Atofarati, in a strongly-worded article, highlighted the difference between the two figures, Dr. Abdulkadir Tunji Nagode, who was recently appointed as the new Amana of the Ilorin Emirate by the Emir of Ilorin, and his principal, Prof. Abubakar Suleiman, who held the title of Amana Ngeri before the latter's pronouncements.
According to Atofarati, while Nagode represents the cultural and royal side of the title, Suleiman is seen as the political Amana, deeply rooted in democracy and governance.
Atofarati criticized what he described as an unnecessary controversy stirred by some media figures and political camps.
"They created a dilemma about who the real Amana is," he wrote, referring to how comparisons are being drawn between the two figures.
He drew parallels to historical European figures, William the Silent and William III of Orange, who despite holding the same title, were recognized for their separate contributions to governance and freedom.
"Their firestorm of envy came when one left one camp for the other," Atofarati stated, adding that these individuals were merely celebrating solutions to problems they created.
Atofarati concluded that while Nagode serves as a cultural symbol in the Emir’s palace, Prof. Suleiman remains a significant political figure, whose democratic values and contributions are irreplaceable. He urged critics to recognize the different roles and avoid confusing politics with cultural heritage.
