N17.8Billion: Islamic Cleric Advises Kwara Gov. To Share N1billion To Each LGA For More Impactful Projects
An Islamic cleric, Imam Abdulrazak Aduagba has advised the Kwara state Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to redistribute the controversial N17.8billion Naira earmarked for the construction of Kwara Hotels into more meaningful projects spread across the 16 Local Goverment Areas of the state.
The cleric who spoke today at the Ansarul Islam Moulid Nabiy, Gaa-Akanbi, condemned the decision of the Kwara government to go ahead with the project in spite of overwhelming public outcry against it.
He stated that instead, the Kwara government could consider the possibility of identifying a major impactful project worth one billion Naira in each LGA of the state and execute it for the benefit of the people of the respective local governments.
"People who have the hears of the governor should advise him to consider a distribution of the N17.8billion. It is wasteful for the governor to insist on going ahead with the Kwara hotel project at that huge sum of money. What impact would it have on the common masses?"
"So, instead of spending that much money on Kwara hotel renovation alone, he should share the money into the LGAs at N1billion each and let the people identity project that would impact them themselves."
"If he does that, he would still have a surplus of almost N2billion to utilise on some other projects of his choice."
The Kwara hotel renovation contract has come under public scrutiny after a former member of the House of Representatives and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Moshood Mustapha, in an open letter, alleged the Kwara Governor of fraud and breach of contract on the project.
While Mustapha claimed that he had been awarded the contract by the state government, the latter alleged Mustapha's Crystal Group of incompetence to carry out the project, thus the reason for its revocation.
Several stakeholders in the state, especially religious and traditional rulers have advised the Kwara government against going ahead with the project. They argued that the current economic realities of the state does not support such stupendous expenditure on a luxury project that would only favour a few as against the majority.
