...urges media on accurate, investigative report

The National financial secretary, of Nigeria Union of Journalists and former Kwara NUJ chair, Mallam Abiodun Abdulkareem has been bag award of recognition for his support to the growing of the radio station.

The award was given by the Unilorin Fm on Tuesday at the 10 years anniversary of the radio station for his contribution to the development of the radio station.

Mallam Abdulkareem speaking with our medium at the event appreciated the management and staff of the radio for finding him worthy of a merit award bestowed on him and made a pledge that the recognition would further him to continue his service to God and humanity

"I appreciate the University for finding me worthy for an award of honour on this great event of 10th Anniversary of the UNILORIN FM. I don’t know what I have done to deserve the meritorious of recognition but I promise to continue my service to God and humanity.”

He salute the founding fathers of the radio station such as Professor Oloyede’s administration that gave birth to this radio, Professor Ambali’s administration that kept it alive and the Professor Abdulkareem’s administration for the nurturing to achieve this enviable elevation.

He urged the Unilorin FM management not to relent in their services to their audiences in term of news reporting, educative and entertainment programmes .

He dedicated the award to the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Kwara state council for being there for him for their objectives display of professionalism in the cause of caring out their official responsibilities.

Mallam Abdulkareem therefore, charged journalists in the state to be very thorough in their reporting adding that, they should engaged in thorough investigation and accurate before publishing their report adding that journalists are the light to the world stressing society will be deformed without journalists.

He congratulate you and the Governing Council of the University of Ilorin, the Director, Corporate Affairs of the Institution, Alhaji Kunle Akogun, the Station Manager of 89.3 Unilorin FM , Alhaji Idris Ibrahim Alooma and his team as well as the entire staff and students of the University of Ilorin on the anniversary.

The Director, Corporate Affairs of the Institution, Alhaji Kunle Akogun,in his welcome address earlier, thank the invitees for honoring the invitation adding that it’s the glory of Almighty God that the acorn sowed 10 years ago is steadily blossoming, against all odds, into a virile oak tree.

“This radio station has become a veritable giant in the Savannah, making waves in all areas of broadcasting while effectively serving as one of the public relations outfits of this Better by far citadel.

“Established on August 13, 2009 by the administration of Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, to “provide a window to the larger community about what the University was doing as well as set standard for socially responsible entertainment; serve as a laboratory for training and simulation of activities; prepare students for careers in the media industry; (and generally for) education, information, entertainment and community development purposes”, the Unilorin FM has evidently substantially lived up to the expectations of its founding fathers.

“When it was formally commissioned on October 22, 2011 by former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was represented by the then Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayat Rufai, Unilorin FM pioneered 24-hours transmission in the North Central region of the country and it remains the only campus radio station in the country broadcasting 24/7! Even though this unprecedented and yet unsurpassed feat was temporarily disrupted due to a devastating thunderstorm in August last year that wreaked havoc on its transmitting equipment, no other campus radio station in the country has experimented with, much less engaging, in 24 hours broadcasting. The best any of them is doing is six to eight hours daily.

“It has also significantly contributed to the reduction of tension on the University campus. This is a very commendable contribution when one considers the regularity of and rapidity at which crises erupt on most university campuses across the country. That the University of Ilorin enjoys a significant amount of harmony over the years is partly attributable to some of the peace building programmes aired on the FM station.

“The impact of the station in the achievement of the public relations desires of the University cannot be over-emphasised. The University has relied on it for the dissemination of information and refutation of misinformation about the institution and its operatives on many occasions. It has also consistently placed its platform at the disposal of officials of the University to enlighten members of the public on issues of contemporary significance.

"The level of respectability currently being enjoyed by the University is partly due to the quality of services offered by the station. It is on record that the Unilorin FM has never been sanctioned by any of the regulatory authorities since its inception.

"There is an urgent need for the University management to consider the upgrade of the University radio’s licence to full commercial status. This will not only boost the station’s performance of its information, education and entertainment functions to its expanding audience, it will also enhance its ability to generate revenue for the University."

Other awardees on the occasion included the founder of the radio station, Professor Is'haq Oloyede; the DG National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Mallam Is'haq Moddibo Kawu; DG National Library of Nigeria, Professor Lenrie Aina; the Ooni of Ife Oba Babatunde Ogunwusi Enitan; Alhaji Laola Shalasi; immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali; and some eminent Nigerians.
